St Patrick's Day
Activities
Pass the Potato Jig
This St Patrick’s Day activity is a variation of
February Frog Frolic. Players form
a circle and pass the potato around while Irish Jig music is playing in the background.
The children must pretend that the potato is hot, and therefore pass it as quickly
as possible.
The first person to drop it gets to do their version of an Irish Jig in the centre
of the circle. Continue playing
until all players have danced a jig.
Award small prizes at the end for:
* the most energetic jig
* the most creative jig
* the fastest jig
* the funniest jig
* the laziest jig and so on…
Participants will be keen to give the jig their best go
which increases the entertainment
factor.
Leprechaun’s Lost Treasure
Select one player to begin as the leprechaun. They must turn their back while the
others pass the treat between them in time to the sound of Irish music. The treat
can be a sweet or chocolate.
When the music stops, the leprechaun opens his or her eyes and turns around. The
leprechaun’s task is to guess who is hiding the treasure in their fist or behind
their back.
If they guess correctly within three turns the leprechaun get to eat the treat.
If not, the game starts again. Another leprechaun is chosen and they must hide their
eyes while the treasure gets passed around again.
Pot of Gold Treat
Resources:
* hula hoops
* individually wrapped candies, bars, sweets or chocolates
Task:
Players must stand behind a line and
take turns tossing the treats into the ‘pot
of gold’ hoop.
The object of the game is to toss as many treats into the pot of gold as possible.
When all the treats have been thrown, the players can collect only those that landed
in the hoop to share out between them all.
For older players the toss line can be further away from the pot of gold to make
the game more of a challenge. Alternatively, a smaller pot of gold, such as a bucket,
could be used.
