When Is The Next Leap Year?
(29-Feb-2012) Leap Year
Activities
Ladies Initiative
Here?s a leap year activity that not everyone will be jumping to try. Traditionally
on February 29th women can propose to their partners.
Hula Hoop Hop
This leap year activity is a hit with the young ones. Place a series of hula hoops
on the floor in a circle and a sweet or chocolate in one of them. You will need
at least the same number of hoops as players. Players hop around the circle from
hoop to hoop. When the music stops they freeze and the person in the hoop with the
treat gets to keep it. The game continues till everyone has had at least one sweet
each.
A leap year occurs every four years when February has 29 instead of 28 days. This
is because a year is not exactly 365 days long. Actually it is 365 days, 5 hours,
48 minutes and about 45 seconds. So every four years this adds up to an extra day,
which is how leap years came to be recognised.
Hoppers and Bouncers
To play this leap year activity you will need a wall mounted ?pond?. (A large blue
sheet of paper works well.) Draw or stick some lily pads on to it.
Have ready or have the children cut out some frog shapes. These they can name and
decorate. Attach double sided sticky tape to the reverse of each frog.
Each participant then has a turn at placing their frog on a lily pad whilst blindfolded.
At the end of the party or leap year activity session participants can remove their
frogs from the pond to
take home with them.
February Frog Frolic
You definitely don?t want to be caught holding this one!
Have your players seated in a circle. While the music plays a toy frog is thrown
around the circle. It can be thrown to anybody, so players must pay attention.
When the music stops the person left holding the frog is out. The game continues
until only one person is left. This person is the winner.
The prize for everyone is one extra day in February!
Beef Froganoff
This leap year activity is good fun for creative minds. Teens will especially enjoy
this one as well.
Divide your players into teams. Each team invents and writes down ideas for a fun
leap year menu or recipe for a February 29th banquet. Set a realistic time frame
to complete the task. Must be less than 365 days.
No prizes, but great fun to read out the results - though best not tried and tasted.
